This outdoor altar, hosted by Capital Real Estate on 1940 Market Street, was dedicaded to Lilia Carrillo, Ángela Peralta y Gertrudis Bocanegra, outstanding Mexican women

Quiping a saying that stereotypes women as incapable of being solidarian and loyal to each other, we dedicated this altar to three who excelled in showing us the way to defying those negative roles. The women: Gertrudis Bocanegra, human rights activist of Colonial Mexico; Angela Peralta, opera singer known as the Mexican nightingale, a young star of La Scala; Lilia Carrillo, abstractionist painter of La Ruptura. We carefully placed alongside flowers, candles, skulls, and alegrías; brushes, paint, books, music sheets, a guitar, a music stand. Those dear objects were there to make our honored women feel at home and to recreate for our daughters and grand daughters the world that let those icons turn things around for themselves and others to come...

Día de los muertos is not a morbid ritual. It is a way to come to terms with life and death. A way to understand ourselves beyond, as we look into how others will remember us...

Las muertas de la frontera

Dedico esta ofrenda a las mujeres que en la brega de la diáspora por una vida mejor dejan la vida. Ellas, luchadoras sin tregua... nos acompañan desde la eternidad con su entereza, su arrojo, su decisión de luchar, literalmente, hasta la muerte.

Esta ofrenda fue levantada en el contexto del Centro Comunitario de Sherman Heights cuya tradición de ofrendas mortuorias cumplió en 2006 doce años.



























This altar honors those who have died in their search for a better life. Following a tradition intermixing humor andritual, this offering aims to be critical of those who diminish the role of immigrants, highlighting the meaningful presence ofwrokers (women in particular). Las muertas quips the headlines long present in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico -Muertas de Juárez-, and brings forth the fact that women of all latitudes undergosimilar tragic ends.
